WOODEYE — “THE GROUND REMEMBERS” By Desiree Sims

WOODEYE — “THE GROUND REMEMBERS”

PAGE 1 — ROOT MEMORY

Panel 1 (Full-width, underground cross-section)
A tangle of roots beneath a forest floor. Some are alive. Some are severed.
Dark shapes of old stumps above them.

CAPTION:
Not silence.
Pressure.

Panel 2 (Close on a cut root end)
The wood is scarred, blackened, sealed badly.

CAPTION:
Here, trees were taken.
Not finished with.

Panel 3 (Deeper underground)
Poisoned soil layers—slick, iridescent, sleeping.

CAPTION:
Here, harm learned patience.

Panel 4 (Ancient root corridor)
A massive, empty hollow where something used to rest.

CAPTION:
Here, something stepped aside.
And was never asked back.

PAGE 2 — THE WATCHER FORMS

Panel 1 (Roots tightening)
Roots begin pulling inward—not attacking, deciding.

Panel 2 (First eye opens)
A single wooden eye ignites—green, not glowing so much as recording.

Panel 3 (Multiple eyes emerge)
More eyes open across the barked skull—each one different, each focused elsewhere.

CAPTION:
The forest did not choose a weapon.
It grew a witness.

Panel 4 (Hands forming from wood and branch)
Fingers interlace, unfinished but intentional.

PAGE 3 — BREATH

Panel 1 (WoodEye’s chest cavity)
Air moves through him. Leaves shiver.

CAPTION:
He inhaled.

Panel 2 (The forest air)
Spores. Smoke residue. Old iron. Rot.

CAPTION:
The air tasted unfinished.

Panel 3 (Eyes reflecting past events)
Reflections of chainsaws, barrels leaking, firelines.

CAPTION:
Not anger.
Accounting.

PAGE 4 — THE CLEARING

Panel 1 (Wide clearing shot)
A beam of light spears down from the sky.
Other Beings already present—silhouetted, radiant, abstract.

Panel 2 (Distant Beings watching)
Some hover. Some stand. Some circle the beam.

CAPTION:
Power recognizes power.
It always checks first.

Panel 3 (One Being laughing)
A faint smirk. Casual dismissal.

DIALOGUE (OFF):
“A forest thing?”

Panel 4 (Another Being, tilted head)
Studying WoodEye’s lack of spectacle.

DIALOGUE (OFF):
“He doesn’t even glow.”

PAGE 5 — THE BEAM HESITATES

Panel 1 (WoodEye lifts his head)
Not toward the Beings.
Toward the beam.

Panel 2 (Close on the beam)
The light flickers. Frays slightly.

CAPTION:
For the first time since the Battle began—
the beam hesitated.

Panel 3 (WoodEye’s wooden eye)
The green intensifies—not brighter, deeper.

Panel 4 (Small speech bubble)
WOODEYE:
Easy.

CAPTION:
Not a command.
A reminder.

PAGE 6 — RESPONSIBILITY

Panel 1 (Beam sealing)
The beam closes slower than usual.
Edges catch like light in branches.

Panel 2 (Empty clearing)
When it vanishes, the space feels heavier.

CAPTION:
Something had taken responsibility for the space it occupied.

Panel 3 (A Being steps closer)
Boot cracks dead twigs deliberately.

DIALOGUE:
“You’re here to rule?”

PAGE 7 — WHAT HE SEES

Panel 1 (Split panel: two eyes)
Left: living eye—raw power, aura, potential.
Right: wooden eye—soil collapse, aftermath, scars.

CAPTION:
Through one eye, power.
Through the other—what comes after.

Panel 2 (WoodEye turns his head)
Roots beneath the ground subtly tighten.

WOODEYE:
No.

Panel 3 (Ground detail)
Roots curl just enough around the Being’s boots.

PAGE 8 — THE ANSWER

Panel 1 (WoodEye speaking calmly)
No raised voice. No threat.

WOODEYE:
“I’m here to make sure whoever does…”

Panel 2 (Roots shifting below)
Barely perceptible. Unignorable.

WOODEYE:
“…remembers what they’re standing on.”

Panel 3 (Forest reaction)
Vines creep. Leaves unfurl. Growth at the wrong speed.

CAPTION:
The forest responded.
Not violently.

PAGE 9 — INSTINCT

Panel 1 (Clearing tightening)
Stumps disappear under green. Paths narrow.

CAPTION:
The clearing began to close.

Panel 2 (Other Beings stepping back)
They don’t discuss it.

CAPTION:
Instinct outran pride.

Panel 3 (WoodEye walking forward)
Past them. Into the contested world.

CAPTION:
He did not claim territory.
He marked record.

PAGE 10 — THE LESSON

Panel 1 (Close on WoodEye’s footfall)
Soil compacts—just enough.

Panel 2 (Forest marking the path)
Subtle changes. Rings in bark. Bent grass.

CAPTION:
Wherever he passed, the ground remembered.

Panel 3 (Distant sky)
The beam begins to form again—far away.

CAPTION:
More rulers would arrive.

Panel 4 (Final wide shot)
WoodEye moving forward, forest watching with him.

CAPTION (FINAL):
Power can claim the sky.
But the ground was already watching.
